Recently I opened an NPS (National Pension Scheme) account for a relative and was pleasantly surprised at the ease of account opening compared to my experience when I opened one a few years back. SIPs eating into luxury car sales: Mercedes - Times of India It looks like there is no free lunch, indeed :) This model is better than no-cost-EMI since, in addition to getting a profit (through a lower price negotiated with the seller), it allows the seller to forecast a future purchase accurately and plan production/operation accordingly. Their model is to tap into the SIP mindset of the consumer, making the consumer pay upfront. Again we would be mistaken if we feel that such firms are not making profits. A few startups have extended this model beyond gold to luxury products. Here, you pay monthly instalments in advance and eventually get a bonus/benefit to make the final purchase. This is not an entirely new model - similar to the gold savings scheme offered by the gold jewellers. But the customer still pays back the market price to the lender via no-cost-EMI, allowing the lender to profit even though technically no interest is charged.Ī friend shared another interesting model - a deposit-based purchase. With No-cost-EMI, the lender strikes a deal with the seller to pay prices lower than the product's market price. Interesting TOI article here - īusiness models, like the no-cost-EMI, allow consumers to purchase aspirational products. #productmanagement #software #softwareplatformĪs more and more people start imbibing good investment habits, especially through SIP, these habits have become a competitor for consumerism, especially in buying luxury goods - Cars, iPhones, etc. If this sounds interesting, I will follow up with posts on the above focus areas. Technical knowledge: Understand the architecture decisions, and provide inputs on scale & flexibility needs. Change management: Since multiple users have dependencies on the platform, it is necessary to secure alignments, have a clear deployment strategy and ensure backward compatibility for any upgrades/changes/feature additionsĦ. Long-term sustainability: In addition to business impact & cost of development, prioritize based on long-term considerations over short-term tradeoffsĥ. Metrics: Focus on platform metrics such as availability, performance, speed, quality, cost, scale & usageĤ. Platform differentiation: Identify and prioritize core interactions that are often repeated to eliminate undifferentiated work for users so that they can focus on complementary & specialized interactions/functionalitiesģ. Typically, does not work with end customersĢ. Customers: Work with users such as developers, producers, and partners to enable/simplify their product development. There are a few critical differences in focus areas for Platform PM compared to other PMsġ. cloud service platforms or payment platforms. So, what does a platform product manager do?Ī Platform product manager is involved in creating and maintaining a software platform that facilitates the delivery of an application or service to its users (internal or external). While there are many resources on product management, they mainly focus on application (website/app) or API or growth or AI/ML product management. GitHub - donnemartin/system-design-primer: Learn how to design large-scale systems. Search on Youtube to find system design videos - #technology #design #learning #pm Grokking the system design interview - ģ. Sharing some resources, I used for learning the basics of system design for PMs:Ģ. Most important are: Understanding system design, data analysis using SQL, fundamental cloud components knowledge, basics of statistics & ML, etc. Most importantly, it helps you gain the respect of the engineering team :)ģ. A PM needs to communicate with the developers/architects, discuss design & tradeoffs (from a product goal POV), understand resourcing constraints/time taken for development and put the product roadmap with the knowledge of the latest incoming technologies. One can start as a PM without tech knowledge, but PMs need to build technical knowledge to grow. Can you excel as a PM without technical knowledge? The simple answer is 'No' - Technical knowledge is learnable, and there is much free material available.Ģ. Do you need technical knowledge to become a PM? ![]() Sharing my answers to a few commonly asked questions based on my learnings:ġ. I have had the good fortune of working with some great PMs who did not have software engineering degrees/backgrounds. PM aspirants feel they are not cut out for the PM role since they lack technical knowledge/education. ![]()
